Hotel Riva

Hotel Riva is a four-star beachfront hotel with an enviable spot on Slovenska Obala, the seafront promenade that runs beside Budva's long Slovenska Beach on the Montenegrin Adriatic. The sand is only a few steps from the door, while the marble lanes of Budva's walled Old Town are a short stroll away. Guests rate the location an excellent 9.2, and couples in particular single it out.

The accommodation is arranged as spacious suites and an apartment, each with its own balcony or terrace looking over the garden or the town, plus air conditioning, a minibar, a work desk, soundproofing and a modern private bathroom. Layouts run from 45 to 60 square metres and sleep up to four, so couples, friends and families all find room to spread out.

Downstairs, a family-friendly restaurant serves Italian cuisine in a relaxed, modern setting, and breakfast can be taken in the room. A sun terrace and garden face the sea, free Wi-Fi reaches throughout, and boat trips leave from the nearby harbour.

The hotel's rooms

Hotel Riva keeps things generously sized, with just three types: two terraced suites and a one-bedroom apartment. Every option comes with its own private terrace and a balcony view over the garden or the town, along with air conditioning, a minibar, a work desk, soundproofing and a modern ensuite bathroom. Sizes run from a roomy 45 square metres up to a full 60, and each pairs a king-size bed with a sofa bed so two to four guests can settle in comfortably. What sets them apart is space and layout: the suites offer open-plan comfort with a terrace, while the apartment adds a separate bedroom and living area for those who want extra room and a more residential feel.

Location and what to see

Getting there

Hotel Riva sits right on Slovenska Obala, the beachfront promenade beside Budva's long Slovenska Beach, with the sand only a few steps from the door. The nearest airport is Tivat (TIV), about 20 kilometres away and 25 to 30 minutes by road through the Tivat–Budva tunnel; a taxi runs around 45 euros, private transfers can be arranged in advance, and the Alo Express bus links the two several times a day. Podgorica Airport is roughly 65 kilometres away for wider connections. Budva's main bus station is about a kilometre from the hotel, with frequent coaches along the coast to Kotor, Cetinje and beyond. Once you arrive, the seafront and the walled Old Town are easily covered on foot; drivers should note that no vehicles enter the Old Town, and paid car parks line the Slovenska Beach area.

What to see

The star attraction is Budva's Stari Grad, the compact walled Old Town a short stroll away, where marble lanes wind past the Citadela fortress, small churches and the Ballerina statue on the rocks; you can walk the whole quarter in about 90 minutes, then climb the ramparts for views over the Adriatic. Sun-seekers are spoilt: Slovenska Beach is on the doorstep, while Mogren Beach lies just beyond the Old Town along a scenic cliffside path. The most famous excursion is Sveti Stefan, the photogenic fortified islet about 11 kilometres south, best admired from the Milocer viewpoint. Boat trips run from the harbour to nearby coves and islands, and the mountains of Lovcen National Park reward a longer drive inland. May, June and September bring warm seas and thinner crowds, while July and August are lively but busy, so start beach and Old Town visits early.
